The RP Men's Team picked up some pace to post 3-1 victory over Uruguay, anchored on a convincing win by GM John Paul Gomez and on a surprising Harry Houdini act by IM Richard Bitoon.
Handling White, GM JP simply stamped his class over FM Larrea Manuel in Board 2, proving how the letters G and M differ from the letters F and M. IM Bitoon, on the other hand, eked out a beautiful escape from an impending defeat in the hands of untitled Alvaro Guerrero. Bitoon capitalized on the fatal blunder of Guerrero on the 30th move, and forced the Uruguayan player on move 43.
Chess after all is not all brains and courage, huh? There's that little amount of luck, too, as Bitoon proved it. This royal game has got a lot of elements that will surprise the unaware.
The win over Uruguay put the Philippine Team at No.31 spot out of 149 teams with 7 match points.
May our team sustain their improved pace, especially in the latter half of the tournament.
GO GO GO!!!
