Emmanuel Emperado

One cannot help paying attention to Emmanuel Emperado who is now leading the 1st Florencio Campomanes Cup Memorial Tournament (Challenger) with an almost perfect performance of 7.5/8!!

If I'm not mistaken, he is the son of former Filipina chess Olympian Mila Emperado who runs a chess mini-school at St. Francis Square, just behind the giant SM Megamall.

He defeated erstwhile tourney leader 14-year old Vince Angelo Medina (1932) in Round 7 and then won over Ryan Dungca (2132) in the penultimate round.

But despite his almost flawless performance, his rating performance stands at only 1975 after Round 8 because he played against five unrated players.

His highest rated opponent in the tournament is No.5 seed Samson Lim Jr (2187) whom he beat in Round 4.

I'm not sure if winning the Challenge Section will already gain for him the National Master title.
