GM Eugene Torre (in photo), Asia's first grandmaster, showed the way for the No.37 seed Philippine Men's Team in Round 3 of the 2010 Chess Olympiad (Open) to save a 2-2 draw versus the No.63 seed Scotland.
A true Olympiad veteran, Torre essayed a brilliant game against IM Stephen Burns-Mannion, fashioning out a highly balanced, technical, and precise game from the opening up to the last push in the endgame. Excellent game indeed by GM Torre. How I want to see more of that kind of game!!
GM Wesley So and IM Richard Bitoon had eventful draws. And although GM Darwin Laylo lost his game against Ketevan GM Arakhamia-Grant in their Board 2 encounter, this Scottish braveheart really earned my admiration. Ketevan sacrificed his Knight and his Queen - but still beat Laylo. Watch their game and be amazed!!
May the draw with the much lower-ranked Scotland Team, hopefully, do not dampen the spirit of our team, which had earlier lost its match against team Spain. May they get inspiration from the promising performance of our neighbors from Vietnam which ably beat powerhouse Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan successively in Round 2 and 3, respectively.

In Round 4, the RP Men's Team will face No.77 seed Team Paraguay (RtgAvg 2330) which does not even have a single grandmaster in its lineup.
Team Paraguay composition:
Bo. |
| Name | Rtg |
1 | IM | Cubas Jose Fernando | 2463 |
2 | FM | Patriarca Luis Carlos | 2308 |
3 | FM | Latorre Manuel | 2284 |
4 | FM | Vazquez Guillermo | 2166 |
5 | FM | Peralta Eduardo | 2266 |
Against Paraguay, our team is expected not only to win - but to win convincingly. A 2.5:1.5 victory would not be convincing enough.
