Farewell

This is the most painful part of it: saying goodbye.

I missed the mark, dear readers. Remember that I predicted GM Wesley So - the source of inspiration for many Filipinos - to finish in Top 3 of the just concluded 43rd Biel International Chess Festival. I promised that if my forecast went wrong, then I would stop chesswindows blogging for good. Wesley finished the tournament in 5th place. Oh boy, my prediction did just go wrong.

Please don't get me wrong though. Wesley has nothing to do with the death of this blog. It was my prediction that just went wrong.

Men are defined by honoring their words. I am honoring mine. And so this is it.

I just hope that this blog has served its purpose of being a source of even the slightest inspiration for all of you. Through this blog, I have made it my personal mission to fire up the positive side in us. It's my simple way of sparking hope and inspiration in a nation that has perhaps forgotten how it is to dream.

I really appreciate all your clamors for this blog to carry on despite my failed prediction. If ever this blog would continue to serve you, my dear readers, a personal note from GM Wesley So telling me to keep on blogging would keep this blog alive.

Till then.

Wesley is 5th in Biel

It's not that easy to be a Wesley So. It takes a superhuman to shoulder the aspirations, hopes and dreams of the Filipino chess community.

The genius in him deprives him of being a human, of being just a teener who perpaps still feels afraid to be alone at night, half the globe away from his family. The responsibility bestowed on his shoulder is so huge it encompasses the expectations of a nation which thirsts for a source of inspiration - all because he is looked up to as a hero, and that his nation has has a few good men who can cheer up the human spirit.

Don't forget that he's just 16 years old!

His 5th place performance in the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival is not that good, but not that bad either. No excuses. He finished 5th (2 wins, 2 losses, 5 draws), below the expectations of his legionnaires.

But despite his below-the-expectation performance, however, my admiration for Wesley did not diminish even by a bit. In fact, my admiration has continued to grow bolder.

Why? It's because it's the kind of him that makes a sport an enjoyable human pursuit. He simply gives life to a sport, not only by his romanticism with the board and pieces but also by his natural charisma to win the attention and the hearts of the chess community wherever he sets his feet into.

Did you know that this young lad was left by a plane on his flight for this tournament and had to travel by train instead? He just did that all by himself!! Can you imagine the emotional strength of this yound lad? After that unhappy incident, he was still able to impress the Swiss crowd by holding a 21-man simul, winning all of the matches, as if saying "I'm here, and I mean business."

He furthered his career in Biel, I tell you. He won the hearts of the chess community there, I can't be wrong. And the world of chess? Just wait, Wesley has just started his engine.

Anish beats Wesley again

GM Wesley so failed to avenge his loss to GM Anish Giri in their last encounter in Corus Group B early this year, this time losing again to the young Dutch grandmaster in the penultimate round of the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival. The match-up card between So and Giri now stands at two wins and a draw in favor of Giri.

Wesley's loss to Giri put him out of the title contention and perhaps even in the top 3 spots - which happens to signal the impending death of this blog (remember my wager?).

Nonetheless, I strongly believe that this loss cannot dampen the spirit of Wesley in pursuing his dream. All those who believe in him - including me - will always be behind him, through laughters, tears and pain, as he climbs up the ladder of greatness.

Go, Wesley!

86th NCAA chess team tourney kicks off

Have you ever imagined Philippine chess without the role of inter-school/college/university chess tournaments?

Academics institutions – for sure – have chess development programs for their players through their coaches and teams. They provide for chess skills development and financial requirements of their prized board warriors.

Indeed, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) must be thankful of the role of academic institutions in propelling chess development in the country.

Or, if I may rephrase this statement: the NCFP should take academic institutions as its role models for effective and sustainable chess development program for the Filipino youth.

By the way, the 86th NCAA chess tourney kicked off last Saturday (July 24). Opening ceremonies and Round 1 matches were held at the Cyberzone of SM Manila.

Two upsets

BY: BOBBY ANG

(As published in Chess Piece, Business World, 26 June 2010)

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting is an elite by-invitation-only chess tournament held every summer in Dortmund, Germany. It is one of the four super-GM tournaments in the international chess circuit, the others being Corus Wijk aan Zee, Sofia and Linares.

The tournament used to be a 12-man round-robin event, but as the budget got tighter the entry list dwindled down until nowadays it is composed of a six-player field playing double round-robin. Four of the players are invited on the basis of their past tournament results, one is for the highest-rated German player (usually this meant Robert Huebner, but since his retirement from active play in the early 2000s it was GM Arkady Naiditsch who took his place) and one slot is reserved for the winner of the Moscow Aeroflot Open -- this year it translated into the Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem.

The Dortmund super-tournaments are usually plagued with a lot of short draws, but this year there was a change of wind and there were a lot of hard fights, and several upsets scored. In the second round former FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov proved that he is not yet a spent force by winning against the top seed Vladimir Kramnik.

The Bogo Indian is not as popular now than it used to be. The Great Swede Ulf Andersson was its main promoter and now that he is semi-retired the opening receded together with him. The advantage of the Bogo Indian is that Black’s plans are easy to implement and you don’t need to know a lot of theory. Against an aggressive white player this is a good antidote, but a patient "technical" player will make you suffer.

After losing his world championship title Kramnik has been trying to sharpen his style a bit. This has caused a few more losses than normal. Add this game to the list of "games Kramnik usually does not lose." Playing against an ultra-solid opponent he varied his opening moves a bit to get more interesting play. It did not turn out to be very wise as Ponomariov got a strong position out of the opening. Kramnik could not coordinate his pieces properly and got hit with a nice tactical shot which forced a winning endgame.

Ponomariov, Ruslan (2734) -- Kramnik, Vladimir (2790) [E11]
Sparkassen GM Dortmund GER (2), 16.07.2010

This game lasted 36 moves but he could have resigned on move 21 with a clear conscience.

Another upset was in the 4th round. Le Quang Liem proved that he belonged in this august company by taking down Ponomariov.

Le Quang Liem (2681) -- Ponomariov, Ruslan (2734) [D87]
Sparkassen GM Dortmund GER (4), 18.07.2010

Lately Le Quang has been training under former FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman, and it shows, for he has shot up the rating lists and is now in the top 50 of the world.

So loses lead to Caruana

So vs Caruana in Round 5 (Photo sourced from tournament's official website)

In one of the most anticipated face-offs by the global Filipino chess community, GM Wesley So's game against GM Fabiano Caruana of Italy in Round 5 of the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival turned out to be a national joy-killer.

The loss to Caruana stalled Wesley with 3.0 points, tied with three others from 2nd to 5th place.

I view Wesley's defeat against the Italian GM from a positive perspective nonetheless. The loss, hopefully, could fire up a sense of urgency in him. Didn't I mention of motivation, the difference between "playing to win" and "playing not to lose"?

Time to see fire on board.
