Right from the start

GM Wesley So (left) moved closer to hitting the 2700-mark by gaining 4.2 Elo points following a victory over GM David Howell of England in Round 1 of the 43 Biel International Chess Festival. So's live rating now stands at 2678.2. Playing black, Wesley perhaps caught Howell by surprise by employing a Caro-Kann defense - which indeed proved effective.
