Defending champion Rolly Parondo Jr. captured the title in the just concluded 2010 Oton Seniors Invitational and 6th DWP Qualifying Chess Tournament. The event was held from May 15-16 at the Briones residence in Oton, Iloilo.
Parondo, a 2-time national qualifier of the Shell Youth Active Chess Tournament, juniors category, scored 7 out of a possible 8 points in a 9-player round robin with 25mins and 3 seconds delay format. His lone set back came after the third round when he lost to Bernard Gallo. Parondo’s effort made him P3,000.00 richer while Gallo who placed 2nd with 6.5 points got P2,000.00. At third was CPU varsitarian Michael Silvederio with 5 points while Aquilino Calambro was in 4th place with 4.5 points. Silvederio and Calambro received P1,000.00 and P750.00, respectively.
Ralph Renzo Otero, Jimmy Britanico and Rolando Rodrigo tied for 5th to 7th place, but Otero, the youngest player in the event at 14 edged the duo with a higher tie breaks. At 8th and 9th place were JoeMari Gallardo and Stephen Villanueva, respectively. The top 6 finishers in this event will join the other 26 invited players in the 6th DWP All-Panay Invitational Rapid Chess Tournament to be held this coming May 22 and 23 at the Residence Hotel, Iloilo City with the champion getting the top purse of P8,000.00.
This yearly Oton chess tournament is being sponsored by Mr. Nonoy Briones , a retired Department of Water and Power (DWP) employee in Los Angeles, California. Tournament arbiter is Engr. Wilson Otero.
