Anand retains World Chess Championship title

The final handshake in the 2010 World Chess Championship (courtesy of chessdom.com)

What a finish! The Anand-Topalov match was a world championship indeed!!

Chessdom.com could not be wrong - the 2010 World Chess Championship was the most watched world championship in the history of chess, thanks to the technology and all the elements that hyped the event.

The spices were just right in flavoring the match: the volcanic eruption, Anand's road travel to Bulgaria, the host's not granting of the visitor's request, the long off-the-board clashes between the two legends, simply perfect.

But above of it all - the games. Beautiful games indeed!!

The almost exclusive 1.d4 openings, if not for the 1.c4 in Round 11, didn't turn out to be a monotonous, boring war after all. In fact, as I see it, the 1.d4 battles - a result of tedious, long preparations at home aided by human seconds and machines - produced what could be the most analyzed 1.d4 games in the history of chess in the years ahead.

I really enjoyed replaying the games over and over again, thanks to the annotations which I had been lifting from chessdom.com from the first to the last round.

And so for the last time in this 2010 WCC match, I am posting here the Round 12 game with annotation from the beautiful GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, still courtesy of chessdom.com
