Barangay Biñan conducts chess clinic

BY: ANTHONY NAVARRO, Chess Windows Laguna Correspondent

It was a dream come true during the election period when Barangay Binan (situated right beside the spawling Laguna Technopark) proceeded with a 2-day chess clinic for beginners for its residents last April 24 and May 2. A brainchild of Sports Coordinator Neil del Prado and strongly supported by Barangay Binan Chairman Joel Aviso and SK Chairwoman Gem Leyson, it was well attended. The project envisioned to have the Barangay engage in various sports, not just basketball and start to form a farm team for future inter-barangay competitions.

This is ideal for grassroots development and yours truly was tapped to give legs and details to the program. Guest lecturer was Calamba's/NAPCA's Rey Yaon who is an experienced chess teacher as well at the grassroots level. Meals were provided by the Bgy / Sir Neil and chessbooks were raffled off to spur interest among the participants.

I was elated to be approached by Kap Joel to submit a proposal to continue the Bgy's chess program, including more chess clinic sessions and mini-tourneys. This augurs well for the Barangay and the school within its boundary, which happens to be Caritas Don Bosco School. A busier year lies ahead for Barangay Binan chess!
