Panopio, Orozco, Legaspi Top Calamba Rapid Chess Tournament

The chess tournaments ‘boom’ in the Philippines continues to sizzle with a super loaded Labor Day. We were supposed to join this tournament at the E. Baretto National High School in Pansol, Calamba City but a monstrous traffic jam at the SLEX prevented us in doing so, instead we made our way to the Magnolia First Saturday tournament in Bicutan (more on this in separate article).

Due to the said constraints in getting to the venue, the participation got whittled down to 23 participants but the main protagonists were there and the strength of the field was maintained. Calamba veteran campaigner Rodolfo Panopio Jr continued his return to form by ruling the event with 4.5/5. Perzeus Orozco of Siniloan followed closely with 4/5 while new Calamba transferee Gary Legaspi got 3rd place with 4/5 also. Top Lady was Calamba’s Michelle Yaon with 3/5, while Sta Rosa’s John Nikko Minguez was the top junior with 2.5 points. Top kiddie was MJ Marcellana of Sta Rosa with 2 points.
