Theoretical novelties

BY: BOBBY ANG

(Abridged version of Chess Piece article published in the BusinessWorld, February 12, 2010)

The publisher "New in Chess" (NIC) announced a few weeks ago that there is a contest to determine the theoretical novelty of the year 2009, and recently short-listed four games for the prize. They are the following:

So, Wesley (2627) -- Gupta, Abhijeet (2569) [C89]
Corus C Wijk aan Zee NED (4), 20.01.2009

REQUIRES JAVA

Well, maybe the editors of NIC Yearbook are right, and the sacrifice is sound, but the problem with the move is that it was in the Marshall Attack, with its many complications as in sometimes ...f5 is good but change the position a little bit and now ...f5 is bad -- pretty soon people will forget that ...f5 played in this situation was introduced by Gupta.
