Scientific conference: Chess should be taught at elementary classes

As I've been saying here again and again, chess is good for kids.

Read this post by GM Susan Polgar about the scientific basis of the benefits that kids can get from chess.

This concept is no longer new, of course. But it's better to remind ourselves again, especially those who have the hands in managing school curricula.

Don't forget that we already have an institution named National Chess Academy (NCA) which was formally established last year (I think April), although we haven't heard of its directions lately.

How can I forget NCA? Right after it was established, one of NCA's people called me up and said: "Ngayong may NCA na, isi-censor na namin ang mga chess blogs tulad ng sa'yo!" Hah?

What a f . . .!! Are you kidding me?

I was so excited last year when it was announced that chess is already part of our kids' subjects in school. But based on my personal interviews with elementary kids and their parents, they said chess isn't part of their subjects yet.

If I remember it right, there was a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) on the training of chess experts/coordinators who will serve as mentors to teachers and students (April 30, 2009).

For 2009, the DepEd scheduled chess trainings from May 7 to 16 in Regions I to VIII, including the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and the National Capital Region (NCR). It also scheduled chess trainings in Regions IX, XII, the CARAGA and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Can we get an update about these, please?

No doubt, chess in the grassroots, especially among the youth, has seen a reinvigorated growth lately. National and local youth tournaments have been flooded with huge turnout of participants.

Perhaps, we are heading to the right direction. I am hoping that this momentum continue despite the meager -if not lack of it - support from the government.

Medyo bogged down etong NCA o chess in curriculum bro, as per informal talk with GM Bong during his workshop, awaiting the govt side.

Specially this year is an election year and there will be a new administration.

We have to check what's Sec' Lapus' move on 'chess in curriculum' kasi kung DECS circular o memo lang, madaling palitan iyan ng bagong uupo.

If not covered by law, di pa iyan permanet, huwag naman sana.

Tama as aspetong iyon si ragdeam, it needs to be private sector actions.

I'm wondering, why do you allow spam comments published in your blog? If you don't properly mark them as spam, the anti-spam system of any blogging platform will prove ineffective kc malilito sya kung spammer ba talga un o hindi.

Anyway, kakatuwa naman ung tumawag sau na un about censoring chess blogs. I wonder kung anong nangyari sa usapan nyo. And by the way, ano na ba talga nangyari sa chess academy nila? Wala man lng official website, hinanap ko sa google.
