17th Shell Chess Active

As expected, the 17th Shell Chess Active (NCR Leg) went successfully at the Mall of Asia (MOA) over the weekend (June 20 to 21).

GM Torre hit the nail on the head by using the term “consistency” in describing the character that makes Shell Active successful through the years.

Just imagine 17 long years. That’s how noble – and great – this grassroots project is!!

If you were there at MOA last weekend, you’d certainly be delighted by a wonderful scenery – a flock of kids and teenagers playing chess in the spacious Music Hall of MOA (during Day 1) with rustic breeze and inviting seaside at the background.

The number of participants was simply awesome. There were 155 boards! for the Kiddies Division (or 310 participants) and 95 boards (not sure) for the Juniors.

To see a 3-year old participant who could hardly reach the pieces on the table – and taking down chess notations – would simply melt your heart. Fantastic scene indeed.

I was there from Day 1 to Day 2. It was simply a fantastic experience being there.

After the two days of action, six names emerged victorious to qualify for the national finals of Shell Active which will be held at the latter part of the year.

Congratulations to the good men and women behind this worthy project!!
