10th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships Round 1

The Philippine contingent produced a relatively good performance in Round 1 of the 10th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Hue City, Vietnam.

Of the lean 25-member Philippine team (kiddies and juniors), 11 players won their games, 5 had draws, and 9 suffered setbacks (+11 -9 =5).

Remarkably, the youngest tandem of Filipino age-groupers – Julius Gonzales and Dennis Gutierrez, Jr. in the Open 8 category – won both their games.

Seeing the youngest members of the RP team winning is a good sign. It only means that they are comfortable playing in an unfamiliar venue far away from home.
