Letran beats Baste to gain finals slot

COLEGIO San Juan de Letran played resiliently to beat San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 3-1, to claim the right to face College of St. Benilde -De La Salle for the 85th season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Chess Team Championships Senior division Saturday, 1 pm at the ground floor Cyberzone area in SM City, Manila.

Chester Brian Guerrero beat Jayson Mercado, Jesus Datu outplayed Louie Salvador and Jesus Benjamin Lising crushed Jay-R Sumagang, on Board 1, 2 and 4, respectively.

John Albert Bongon nipped Randolph Pascua on board 3 to prevent a possible-shut out loss for the Stags.

“The Letran boys gave one of their best performances. This time Letran played resiliently and intensely.” said Letran head coach NM Roland Joseph Perez. Letran enjoys a twice-to-beat.

Last Tuesday, San Sebastian College-Recoletos turned back Colegio San Juan de Letran, 3-1, during their cross-over semi-final round to forced a play off on Thursday for the last final berth.
Defending NCAA Senior champion College of St. Benilde -De La Salle edged Mapua Institute of Technology, 2.5-1.5, on Tuesday to earn the first final berth.

Added attraction today, the game between defending junior champion Colegio San Juan de Letran goes up against last year’s runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

San Sebastian beat University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 3-1, while Letran defeated CSB-De La Salle Greenhills, 3.5-0.5, during their cross-over semi-final round on Tuesday to arrange a titular showdown for the coveted junior crown. By Marlon Bernardino
