Deadline for Aguirre open chessfest listup set

THERE will be no extension of the April 16 registration deadline for the 1st Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre open individual chess tournament, which is scheduled to officially kick off on April 19, Sunday, at 1 p.m.

The event will be held at the lobby of Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, 10th-Hilado Streets, Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City, said tournament director and chief arbiter Dodz Felisilda.

The seven-round Swiss system (1 hour-20 moves + 1 hour to finish the game) event, organized by the Game Royale Aficionados of Negros Inc. headed by Dr. Alfonso Teorima, is sponsored by US-based chess patron Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre.

Aguirre came home to Bacolod to renew his ties with the Bacolod chess community by actually seeing action in the tournament.

Registration fee for the tournament is P200. It is open to both male and female chess players of Negros island, as well as guest players from outside Negros who must know how to record chess games using either the Descriptive English Notation (P-K4 - P-QB4) or the Algebraic Notation (e4-c5) and must provide their own tournament size chess sets and chess clocks.

Only participants who have paid will be included in the first round pairings and the tournament director will announce in detail the tournament rules and the first round pairings schedule during the opening ceremonies on April 19.

Prizes for the winners of the event are: for the champion, a P5,000 gift certificate plus 42-inch, four-legged 'king' trophy; for the 1st runner-up, a P4,000 gift certificate plus 36-inch, four-legged 'queen' trophy; for the 2nd runner-up, a P3,000 gift certificate plus 30-inch, four-legged 'rook' trophy; for the 3rd runner-up, a P2,000 gift certificate plus 27-inch, four-legged 'bishop' trophy; and for the 4th runner-up, a P1,000 gift certificate plus 24-inch, four-legged 'knight' trophy.

The 6th to 20th placers will each receive a Eureka chess set.
