MANILA, Philippines - The National Age-Group Chess Championships and National Junior Chess Championships will be held on April 18-22 and April 24-28, respectively, at the Cabagnot Training Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan.
An annual undertaking of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP,) the twin tournaments will be held as part of the association’s youth development program.
Hosting the events is the province of Aklan, headed by Gov. Carlito Marquez, and provincial sports coordinator NM Wilfredo Neri.
At stake are trophies and cash prizes.
The age-group championships will have six divisions in both boys and girls – 18-under, 16-under, 14-under, 12-under, 10-under and 8-under.
Eligible to participate are 18-under (born on or after Jan. 1, 1991), 16-under (born on or after Jan. 1, 1993), 14-under ( Jan. 1, 1995), 12-under (Jan. 1, 1997), 10-under (Jan. 1, 1999) and 8-under (Jan.1, 2001).
Cash prizes are P5,000 and trophy to the champion, P3,000 and trophy to the runner-up, P2,000 and trophy to the third placer, P1,000 to the fourth placer and P500 to the fifth placer.
In the National Juniors, eligible to join are boys and girls 20 years old and below. The champion in the juniors tournament receives P15,000 and trophy. The runner-up and the third placer will pocket P10,000 and P7,000, respectively.
The fourth placer will receive P5,000, the fifth placer P3,000, the sixth placer P2,000, the seventh placer P1,500 and the eighth to 10th placers P1,000.
