Our youth in the 2011 Inter-Provincial tourney

The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) must be credited for bankrolling the participation of our future chess heroes in the 2011 Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championship.

LWUA fielded three teams to this major event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). The teams are LWUA-A, LWUA-B, and LWUA-C. My eyes, however, are set on LWUA-B and LWUA-C, teams that are composed of young lads and ladies, respectively, who at their youthful age have already brought - and hopefully would continue to reap - honors for the country in international competitions.

I might be looking through rose-colored glasses, but our young guns could benefit so much from this experience of battling it out against some of the country's best and brightest.

For instance, 13-year old FM Paulo Bersamina, who has been manning the Top Board for LWUA-B, could have learned much technically and emotionally from his matches against five titled players after eight rounds.

This highly soft-spoken kid from Pasay City faced the likes of FM Sander Severino and GM John Paul Gomez, a truly learning moment to enrich his strength. And as a best blessing of all, he has to face in the final round the country's brightest chess star, GM Wesley So, his roommate in Russia during the most recent edition of Aeroflot Open.

Bersamina is joined by CM Jan Nigel Galan (Board 2), Jerad Docena (Board 3) and Vince Angelo Medina (Board 4) to complete the cast of Team LWUA-B. Notably, Galan and Docena have been showing their class in their respective boards against the country's experienced players, scoring 6.0 each after eight rounds.

These young boys have been performing well in this highly competitive event, now occupying the No.5 spot going into the final round. Bravo!

Congratulations to LWUA (and to the NCFP as well, of course!) for investing in our youth. Former Cong. Prospero Pichay heads both the LWUA and the NCFP.

(I will blog about the campaign of Team LWUA-C - the all-lady team - in my next post.)

Yup, aside of course from FM Paulo, following thru chess-results, Galan and Jerad also had their share of scalped masters. I project them to also get formal masters titles in the near future. Aside from Medina, there's also Gio Mejia & FEU HS like Evangelista,Abuzo,Frayna, Villa and I think Lagula might be Jr College. There's a good kiddies pool honed thru the regular local tournaments...
