Here is an e-mail I received from Julio Catalino Sadorra:

"Thank you for the write-up on my final norm. It is always a pleasure and an encouragement to read your chess articles. I remember reading an article on Joey Antonio’s hard-fought duel against Akopian in FIDE Knockout way back when. It was inspiring and poignant, which explains why I still remember it:).

It was also nice to be reminded of the Novelty Award I received in Bagac which may have influenced my passion for studying opening materials and searching new alleys amidst debates on established lines and variations. With this, I would like to let you know that I discovered a few novelty gems in the process of preparing against the visiting GMs. I appreciate the fact that you appreciate my hard work and time I put in my opening preparations. On this note, I will now let you check out my new discovery in the French, the same opening in which I found a novelty 10 years ago!

I only got to annotate this game now due to academic obligations. Anyway, hope you enjoy it!"
First, let me show you the game from Bagac, with the notes I wrote then.

Asian Under-16 Championship (boys)
Bagac, Bataan
December 2000

Final Standings, boys (in tie-break order)
Filipino unless otherwise stated
1. Sander Severino, 7.0/9
2-3. Tranh Anh Tri (Vietnam), Oliver Barbosa, 6.5/9
4-7. Susanto Megaranto (Indonesia), Luke Leong (Singapore), Julio Catalino Sadorra, Roderick Nava, 5.5/9
Total of 24 participants

John Paul Gomez was more or less regarded as the favorite, since he was the reigning Philippine Junior Champion, but he lost to Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia (now a very strong GM) and seemed to lose the will the fight back. Ino Sadorra was always among the leaders but never really threatened to win. Here is the game which won the novelty prize.

Now it is time to show you Sadorra’s latest novelty, played in the UTD tournament and which he annotated personally for our BW readers.
