ASIA's First Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre of the Philippines stamped his class over WFM Medina Warda Aulia of Indonesia in the fifth round of the on-going TELIN International Chess Tournament 2011 yesterday at the Graha Citra Caraka PT Telkom in Jakarta, Indonesia.
With the win, the Iloilo native Torre raised his total 4.5 points on four wins and a draw in five outings, the same output of GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, winner over countryman IM Halay Taufik.
“I like my chances here now, but it’s still a long way to go,” said the 56-years-old Torre, playing under the banner of National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman/ president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.
“I know I can’t afford to be over-confident since the field is strong,” said Torre, member of the Philippine Chess Team who won silver medal during the last Asia Games, priming up for a tough tournament in Manila this year, dubbed as Battle of the Asian Grandmaster, Subic and Pichay International Chess and the upcoming Southeast Asian Games.
Pichay on his part: "So far so good, we are looking forward another banner year for Philippine chess. Malaking inspirasyon sa mga kabataan kung palalaring manalo si GM (Eugene) Torre sa Indonesia chess tourney," added Pichay, also the head of LWUA.
Up next for Torre is GM Cerdas Barus of Indonesia, who posted his fifth straight wins in as many rounds by beating GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore in their top board encounter.
Zhang, meantime was stuck at 4 points, and was dropped into a tie for 4th to 13th places in the company of Taufik, GM Ardiansyah, IM Sadikin Irwanto, FM Wahono Awam, Junaid Pamungkas and Johan Gunawan of Indonesia, top seed GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia,GM Dibyendu Barua of India and GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam.
