San Sebastian grabs solo lead

SAN SEBASTIAN COLLEGE-Recoletos (SSC-R) grabs the solo leadership board in the on-going Junior division 85th season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Chess Team Championships on Saturday at the ground floor Cyberzone area of SM City, Manila.

The Mendiola based squad blanked Emilio Aguinaldo College, 4-0, to raise total perfect 12.0 points in three outings.

It shall be recalled that SSC-R blasted Jose Rizal University, 4-0, and Arellano University, 4-0, last weekend.

“We hope we can hold the momentum,” said SSC-R coach NM Homer Cunanan. SSC-R settled runner-up in the last year’s edition which topped by Colegio San Juan de Letran.

Letran, playing under the watchful eye of NM Roland Joseph Perez failed to continue their perfect record after a 3-1 triumph over CSB-De La Salle Greenhills, 3-1.

With the win, Letran scored 11.0 points. They already blanked Arellano University, 4-0, and Emilio Aguinaldo College, 4-0, last weekend.

San Beda College at the helm is legendary coach Harold “Henrysky” Mariano climbed at solo 3rd place with 9.0 points after pulverizing Arellano University, 4-0, in the third round.

University of Perpetual Help Dalta System of Ferdie Reyes crushed Jose Rizal University, 3.5-0.5, to scored 5.5 points for fourth place.

Mapua Institute of Technology took bye in the third round according to Chief arbiter IA/ NM Elias Lao. This year’s theme is “Winning drive @85”.

In the fourth round, SSC-R will be pitted against CSB-De La Salle Greenhills which is handled by NM Erwin Carag while Letran goes up against Mapua Institute of Technology of FM Roderick Nava.

Arellano University vs University of Perpetual Help Dalta System while Emilio Aguinaldo College opposite San Beda College. Jose Rizal University is bye.

In the Senior division, Colegio San Juan de Letran shocked defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, 3-1, San Sebastian College-Recoletos bested Emilio Aguinaldo College, 3-1, San Beda College walloped Arellano University, 4-0, University of Perpetual Help Dalta System waylaid Jose Rizal University, 3.5-0.5, and Mapua Institute of Technology is bye.
