WORLD CHESS CUP bound Filipino GM Darwin Laylo added another feather to his cap by ruling the 2009 Malaysian Open (Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open 2009) Blitz Chess Championships at the Ballroom Cititel Midvalley Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, over the weekend.
The Marikina City native Laylo defeated compatriot IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City in an All Filipino knockout stage finals to capture the title and pocket the top prize of RM 800 (Malaysian Ringit Dollar).
On the roads to the finals, Laylo defeated 2009 DATMO Open standard champion Indian GM Negi Parimarjan in the semis while Dimakiling edged countryman RP’s newest GM elect Ronald Dableo, co-champion in the 2009 DATMO Open.
A total of 95 players took part in the preliminary round according to the report of official website yesterday. The time control of the Blitz competition is 3 minutes + 2 second increment. Marlon Bernardino
