IM Oliver Barbosa led the biggest gainers in the list of Top 10 Filipino players based on the 1 March 2011 FIDE Rating List.

Barbosa boosted his rating with huge 45.20 Elo rating points to vault to No.8 spot in the latest rating period. The awesome increment in his Elo rating was the result of his solid performance in his four latest international tournaments: Asean Chess Championships 2010 Open (+17.50); the First HDBank Cup Open chess Tournament (+14.0); Moscow Open 2011 E (+16.90); and Aeroflot open 2011 B (-3.20).

Another notable performer is GM Mark Paragua who zoomed up to No.3 spot on the back of his +26.30 Elo gain. May his momentum continue and get back to the 2600-mark (he’s the first Filipino to break that barrier anyway).

Barbosa, Paragua and GM John Paul Gomez (the third biggest gainer) were the most active players in the period, with 36, 30, and 36 rated games, respectively. Among the Top 10 players, the remaining top gainers were IM Richard Bitoon (+19.20), and GM Darwin Laylo (0.40).

On the other hand, three players in the Top 10 list shook off precious Elo points. GM Wesley So lost the biggest (-6.5), but of course, his No.1 position in the country has remained unthreatened. Wesley played 19 rated games in the review period. The other two players on the minus sign were GM Joseph Sanchez (-2.60) and GM Roland Salvador (-1.4).

GM Eugene Torre and GM Joey Antonio had no rated games in the period.

Is there a way to track previous country ranking for the Phils in the FIDE bi-monthly listings. If this can be charted (y-axis' top can be #1), it will show the gradual progress, and I think these past 2 months may be BIG jump!
