De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) flexed its muscle by dominating the League of Southern Manila Schools (LSMS) chess team championship by sweeping the High School-Boys,High School-Girls and Grade School Divisions last November 21,Saturday at the beautiful Brent Mamplasan campus. DLSL actually finished in a tie at 18.5pts for firstwith Canossa Lipa in the HS-Girls Division but snared the title due to superior tiebreakpoints.

Tournament arbiter and Brent Coach Joel Hicap acknowledged the growing LSMS chess event, from 6 teams last year to 24 teams in 3 Divisions this year, and hopes moreschools participate next year.

Caritas Don Bosco Finishes Strong Second in Grade School Division

Caritas Don Bosco School (CDBS) continued its great maiden voyage by debutting with a runner-up finish in the Grade School Division with 19.5 points to DLSL’s 22.5 points. It was difficult to keep pace with DLSL in the last 3 rounds since they scored 2 shutout 4-0 wins over Brent A and DLS-Zobel (2 boards absent) in rounds 5 and 6. On the other hand,CDBS scored a 3-1 win over DLSZ in round 5 and then clinched second spot with a key 4-0 win over ESS-Team A in round 6. Before that,ESS-Team A was occupying 2nd spot. Southridge School (SRS) captured 3rd place displacing Elizabeth Seton School (ESS)-Team A with its last round win over CDBS 2.5-1.5. ESS faced powerhouse DLSL in the 7th and last round and succumbed 1-3.

DLSL secured the top board medals with Patrick Rubis being top Board 1 with 6.5/7
and tiny 9-year old Alexis Osena getting the top Board 2 medal with 6/6!. Southridge had solid Boards 3 and 4 players thru Juancho Morales (7/7) and Jet Nicolas (6.5/7). Caritas’ Daniel Vincent Navarro bagged the top Board 5 (Alternate) award by scoring 4.5 points out of 5 games. Other notable CDBS performers were Christian Michael Navarro who top scored for the team at Board 1 with 6/7, Paolo Espiritu at Board 2 with 5/7 and Edmund Cruz at 2/3 on Board 4. Tetsuo Otsuka scored 2 wins manning Board 3, including a crucial win over ESS-Team A in round 6.

In the High School Boys Division, the CDBS Team fought valiantly overcoming an
incomplete line-up and high level of the playing field. It was a good learning experience for a first timer, and good preparation leading up to the DBAA competitions this coming long weekend (Nov 28 thru 30). The team finished in 6th place with 10.5 points out of a field of 9 schools, having better result over experienced schools like DLS-Zobel, and Brent International School. Our neighbor Laguna Bel Air (LBA) also participated. Emman Espiritu was top scorer for CDBS HS Team with 5.5 pts on Board 2, while Jonash Dave Espiritu contributed 3 points on Board 1. This will help toughen them up for DBAA, the HS field in LSMS was definitely very competitive!

DLSL underscored its strength in HS-Boys Division through John Zacarias at Board 1 with a perfect 8/8 and similarly Arvin Tejada at Board 2 with 8/8. Mater Ecclesiae (San Pedro) had its best chess bet in Clent Aglibot with 7/8 on Board 3, while Canossa’s Glenn Pasano also got 7/8 result. Alex Mabalot of Southridge scored 4/4 to get top Board 4 honors.

For the HS-Girls, top performers were St Scholastica College’s (Westgrove) Camille Gutierrez with 4/4 at Board 1, DLSL’s Ma. Jerille Gilera with 6/6 at Board 2, ESS’
Fe Esperanza Trampe at 5/6 on Board 3 and DLSL’s Marinelle Macalindong with 4/4 on Board 4.

Congratulations to the LSMS and Brent International School Manila for a successful tournament and looking forward to next year’s competitions!
