Black Day

Notably, the color of Black seems to be setting the look of the 2009 World Chess Cup - thanks to the early wins of GM Wesley So against GM Vassily Ivanchuk (Round 2-Game 1) and GM Gata Kamsky (Round 3-Game 1).

Even GM Peter Svidler posted a win with Black against GM Alexei Shirov (Round 4-Game 1). Add to that the brutal win of GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who extracted a full point from GM Viktor Laznicka (Round 4-Game 1).

Oh boy, oh boy . . . please redefine the meaning of colors and paint Khanty-Mansiysk BLACK today (December 1). Please give Black the meaning of joy.

Hitting from the bottom

In Round 4 of World Chess Cup 2009, GM Wesley So will face an opponent who could weave a real chess masterpiece.

GM Vladimir Malakhov has the tactical genius and a strong will to finish off his opponent. That's brains and emotions combined - elements that make winners.

This is it, folks. As I see it, GM Wesley now has to square off against his toughest opponent yet in this tournament.

Watch Malakhov's games and get a feel of him:

GM Wesley doesn't need to be alarmed, though. He already knows the formula, I guess.

Go Chairman, the whole nation prays for you. God bless!!

Sensation

Chessbase.com pointed to GM Wesley So as the "sensation of the day." Hmnnn . . . how nice to savor.

After knocking out two chess titans - GM Ivanchuk and GM Kamsky - one after the other, GM So has already earned the psychological advantage for his next round (hopefully rounds) assignment.

But still, he does not need to play bigger than he is.

The winning formula stays the same: Wesley must play as his own self. Wesley must play Wesley, nothing else.

Let's watch - again and again - how he eliminated Kamsky (game below was played during the Kamsky-So Round 3-Game 1 match):

Princess Judit

This is the kind of game that will make you fall in love with chess more and more.

Watch how GM Judit Polgar butchered tournament top-seed GM Boris Gelfand in their Round 3-Game 2 encounter. Behind the beautiful face of Judit is a brutal slayer on the board!

World media takes notice

Chessgames.com, the home of Barangay Wesley, gave in. It now offers a live coverage of the So-Kamsky Round 3-Game 1 for FREE.

I think it's something historic at chessgames.com (I could be wrong). For the first time, it offers free live coverage of a chess match between two chess players.

As far as I know, chessgames.com offers LIVE coverage only to premium members - that is, only to subscribers who pay.

Read between the lines, fellas. GM Wesley So is now that big in international chess. Never believe a Western journalist who coined the term "unknown Wesley So from the Philippines." A chess journalist who said that line is surely sleeping in his job and deserves to be fired.

For sure, any chess server knows the large following of Wesley. Perhaps, chessgames.com was alarmed by the free offering of chessdom and chessbomb. And who wouldn't be? In the first place, chessgames.com is the original home of Barangay Wesley. It's media war, brothers.

Any online chess media knows the formula nowadays: Keep Wesley So and you get the highest hits.

Believe it or not, Barangay Wesley is unique. Nowhere else in the world can you find chess addicts like BW members. It's phenomenal indeed. Only if chessgames or chessdom would reveal statistics, Wesley So is the main source of their hits.

Why I say this? The business sector should know it well.

C'mon businesspeople, it's profitable to invest in Wesley. Grab the opportunity. Wesley endorsing your producucts? Expect a high return on investments.

You may watch chessgames.com's LIVE coverage of S0-Kamsky match HERE.

GM So sends GM Ivanchuk home; faces GM Kamsky in Round 3

I expected either a decisive game or a brutal drawn game in Round 2-Game 2 in 2009 World Cup between GM Wesley So and GM Vassily Ivanchuk. The latter expectation was it.

Indeed, these two hot-blooded chess stalwarts lived up to the expectation. One played an aggressive music while the other danced well to the tune.

One was the angry bull while the other played as the masterful matador. The bull gave its best shot, thrusting forward, circling around, fuming like a beast gone wild. But the matador elegantly danced off the aggression and stood unscathed until the end.

Unlike in Round 2-Game 1, however, the blood-hungry sword didn't get through the neck of the raging bull. Perhaps, the wild animal realized that he'd be mercilessly butchered for one misstep.

And so the two separated, one was to go home to feed on a green pasture while the other stood still to wait for another bull.

As I said in my previous post, the Round 2-Game 1 of Ivanchuk-So game belonged to Ivanchuk. To reiterate, it was Ivanchuk's game.

But I give Round 2-Game 2 to So. The honor, indeed, belonged to him this time. So played solidly and sharply - but still with the intent to kill.

After this big upset-win over Ivanchuk, So will advance to Round 3 with the needed confidence against very tough opponent in GM Gata Kamsky.

Again, the formula to win for Wesley is to use the same formula that brought him past Ivanchuk. The formula? Wesley must play as his self. Wesley must play as Wesley, nothing else.

Watch how So masterfully repelled the attack of Ivanchuk. Annotation done by EZZY, a kibitzer of Barangay Wesley at chessgames.com.

GM So makes the world believe

(GM Wesley So. Photo sourced from WCC 2009 official site)

When fire meets fire, expect something hot.

The Ivanchuk-So battle in Round 2-Game 1 of the 2009 World Chess Cup was a collision of burning stars that quaked the universe of chess.

The elements of thunderous explosion were all there. First, we had a young talent whose ferocity knows no fear. Second, we had a real warrior whose attitude in battle is to kill or be killed.

Don't expect peace when warriors of this kind face each other in the battlefield.

See? The beauty of any sports depends on who play it. Chess as a competitive sport is alive, and will continue to be, with the kinds of GMs So and Ivanchuk.

At one moment of the game, Ivanchuk could have opted for a draw . But perhaps he saw that for their heated encounter to end in a cold draw would blemish the beauty of the game.

So Ivanchuk, as unpredictable as he is known to be, chose to play risky. Ah, the risk. Only great people take the risk.

Of course, risk makes chess beautiful, as in any other sport. It's the risk, the unknown that make humans fall in love with chess.

I admire Ivanchuk more with the attitude he put on his game against So. Objectively, it was more of Ivanchuk who made that fight exciting. It was more of Ivanchuk's blood that was sacrificed to paint the battlefield red.

Simply put, the Round 2-Game 1 of Ivanchuk-So match was Ivanchuk's game. And it was a perfect blend: Ivanchuk's raging bull-attack was met by So's merciless sword.

Watch the butchery:

De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) flexed its muscle by dominating the League of Southern Manila Schools (LSMS) chess team championship by sweeping the High School-Boys,High School-Girls and Grade School Divisions last November 21,Saturday at the beautiful Brent Mamplasan campus. DLSL actually finished in a tie at 18.5pts for firstwith Canossa Lipa in the HS-Girls Division but snared the title due to superior tiebreakpoints.

Tournament arbiter and Brent Coach Joel Hicap acknowledged the growing LSMS chess event, from 6 teams last year to 24 teams in 3 Divisions this year, and hopes moreschools participate next year.

Caritas Don Bosco Finishes Strong Second in Grade School Division

Caritas Don Bosco School (CDBS) continued its great maiden voyage by debutting with a runner-up finish in the Grade School Division with 19.5 points to DLSL’s 22.5 points. It was difficult to keep pace with DLSL in the last 3 rounds since they scored 2 shutout 4-0 wins over Brent A and DLS-Zobel (2 boards absent) in rounds 5 and 6. On the other hand,CDBS scored a 3-1 win over DLSZ in round 5 and then clinched second spot with a key 4-0 win over ESS-Team A in round 6. Before that,ESS-Team A was occupying 2nd spot. Southridge School (SRS) captured 3rd place displacing Elizabeth Seton School (ESS)-Team A with its last round win over CDBS 2.5-1.5. ESS faced powerhouse DLSL in the 7th and last round and succumbed 1-3.

DLSL secured the top board medals with Patrick Rubis being top Board 1 with 6.5/7
and tiny 9-year old Alexis Osena getting the top Board 2 medal with 6/6!. Southridge had solid Boards 3 and 4 players thru Juancho Morales (7/7) and Jet Nicolas (6.5/7). Caritas’ Daniel Vincent Navarro bagged the top Board 5 (Alternate) award by scoring 4.5 points out of 5 games. Other notable CDBS performers were Christian Michael Navarro who top scored for the team at Board 1 with 6/7, Paolo Espiritu at Board 2 with 5/7 and Edmund Cruz at 2/3 on Board 4. Tetsuo Otsuka scored 2 wins manning Board 3, including a crucial win over ESS-Team A in round 6.

In the High School Boys Division, the CDBS Team fought valiantly overcoming an
incomplete line-up and high level of the playing field. It was a good learning experience for a first timer, and good preparation leading up to the DBAA competitions this coming long weekend (Nov 28 thru 30). The team finished in 6th place with 10.5 points out of a field of 9 schools, having better result over experienced schools like DLS-Zobel, and Brent International School. Our neighbor Laguna Bel Air (LBA) also participated. Emman Espiritu was top scorer for CDBS HS Team with 5.5 pts on Board 2, while Jonash Dave Espiritu contributed 3 points on Board 1. This will help toughen them up for DBAA, the HS field in LSMS was definitely very competitive!

DLSL underscored its strength in HS-Boys Division through John Zacarias at Board 1 with a perfect 8/8 and similarly Arvin Tejada at Board 2 with 8/8. Mater Ecclesiae (San Pedro) had its best chess bet in Clent Aglibot with 7/8 on Board 3, while Canossa’s Glenn Pasano also got 7/8 result. Alex Mabalot of Southridge scored 4/4 to get top Board 4 honors.

For the HS-Girls, top performers were St Scholastica College’s (Westgrove) Camille Gutierrez with 4/4 at Board 1, DLSL’s Ma. Jerille Gilera with 6/6 at Board 2, ESS’
Fe Esperanza Trampe at 5/6 on Board 3 and DLSL’s Marinelle Macalindong with 4/4 on Board 4.

Congratulations to the LSMS and Brent International School Manila for a successful tournament and looking forward to next year’s competitions!

Believe

I still remember a TV interview with then world-unknown Manny Pacquaio who was preparing for a dream match against then world-famous Marco Antonio Barrera.

That time, nobody believed that Pacquiao could beat Barrera. His compatriots, even his avid fans, had so much doubt as to Pacquiao's chances of winning.

Skeptics said Barrera was simply too world-class for Pacquiao to beat. They even laughed at Pacquiao's ambition.

The TV reporter told Pacquiao: "Paano yan Manny, walang naniniwalang matatalo mo si Barrera."

Manny's face looked serene and simple. "Bahala sila. Basta ako, naniniwala akong matatalo ko si Barrera.

That time, only Pacquiao believed in himself.

And that's what he brought to the boxing ring - that firm belief in his own capacity which served as the brutal force that shocked the boxing world in November of 2003.

Round 11, with the boxing world caught in disbelief, saw the rise of the underdog that will set a historic record of being the best fighter pound-for-pound ever.

The reason why I am saying this is obvious. GM Wesley So (2640), the underdog, will face a heavy favorite GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2739) in Round 2 of the 2009 World Chess Cup.

GM So's chances of winning? Numbers put it at 36.12%.

Well, forget the numbers. What So needs to bring to the chess board when he battles Ivanchuk is the same force that has put Pacquiao to where he is now.

All I can say is: Believe in yourself, Wesley. Believe.

GM So advances to Round 2

GM Wesley So blanked GM Gadir Guseinov in the tiebreaker match (3-0) to advance to Round 2 of the 2009 World Chess Cup.

So's rampage in the rapid category could have already drawn the attention of possible opponents in the next rounds - hopefully he gets there - and prompt them to adopt a battle plan not to engage with him in the rapid. Meaning, beat Wesley in the standard . . . or else.

The following games show So's brutality when it comes to rapid chess. Watch and enjoy!!

Kramnik is back

By BOBBY ANG

(As published in Chess Piece, BusinessWorld, November 23, 2009.)

Tal Memorial Moscow, Russia November 4-19, 2009

Final Standings
1. GM Vladimir Kramnik RUS 2772, 6.0/9
2-3. GM Magnus Carlsen NOR 2801, GM Vassily Ivanchuk UKR 2739, 5.5/9
4-5. GM Viswanathan Anand IND 2788, GM Levon Aronian ARM 2786, 5.0/9
6. GM Boris Gelfand ISR 2758, 4.5/9
7. GM Ruslan Ponomariov UKR 2739, 4.0/9
8. GM Peter Svidler RUS 2754, 3.5/9
9-10. GM Peter Leko HUN 2752, GM Alexander Morozevich RUS 2750, 3.0/9
Category 21

Time Control: Two hours for the first 60 moves followed by 15 minutes for all remaining moves + 30 second increment starting move 61.

The Tal Memorial is the strongest tournament in the year and among the strongest ever in history. Previously, there have been one category-22 tournament and 18 category 21, but removing all the rapid/blindfold events we are left with 10 category-21 events. Then again most of them were six-player double-round events. Linares 2008, the World Championship 2007 (both won by Anand) and Linares 2009 (Ivanchuk triumphant) were eight-player double-round events.

This Tal Memorial 2009 is the first 10-player tournament which reached category 21.
Forgetting about the numbers game, on the chess aspect it was a wonderful tournament as well. Too bad that Carlsen was ill in the first half of the tournament, but he did not come up with two good wins in the final rounds to tie for second place. This fine finish also earned Carlsen enough ELO points to overtake Bulgarian former world champion Veselin Topalov as the highest rated player in the world now by all of 0.6 point (2805.7 vs 2805.1).

In the meantime, three players went for enterprising chess. Kramnik was out to prove that he is not passé and still capable of great chess, Ivanchuk was in the mood to play, and Morozevich found his usual kill-or-be-killed form.

The new Kramnik played active lines and did not take draws if there is any play left in the position. He was tactically alert and quick to take advantage of his opponents’ mistakes. I like him this way.

GM Peter Svidler is amongst the world’s greatest authorities in the Gruenfeld Defense. He plays it all the time with Black against 1.d4.

Two years ago he decided to diversify a bit and started dabbling in the Slav Defence. In a recent article, commenting on a crucial game, he remarked that “I decided to stick to the tried and tested (the Gruenfeld) for this game ” my forays into Slav territory are yet to convince anyone that I know what I am doing there.”

Well, his tried and true got whopped by the new improved super-Kramnik, who rather uncharacteristically pushed forward his h-pawn in a caveman attack.

World-class Filipino chess players

Of the top 23 seeded participants in the World Chess Cup 2009 who are all 2700-rated players, two of them lost to much lower rated opponents.

One is No.16-seed GM Sergei Movsesian (2718) who bowed out of the tournament after a shocking defeat in the hands of No.113-seed GM Yu Yangyi (2527) of China in a 1.5-0.5 score.

The other one is No.21 GM David Navara (2707) who lost to No.108-seed GM Darwin Laylo (2552) in Game 2 of Round 1. Navara and Darwin will face each other in the tiebreaker after a 1.0-1.0 standing.

But regardless of the final result of the Navara-Laylo tiebreaker match, the underdog Laylo of the Philippines has already proven that he can be in the company of world-class players.

To overemphasize it, Laylo's win over Navara in Game 2 of Round 1 attests to the highly competitive abilities of Filipino chess players.

Meanwhile, all of the top 14 seeded players in the World Chess Cup 2009 have already conquered their Round 1 opponents to make it to Round 2. They are:

Gelfand, Boris 2758
Gashimov, Vugar 2758
Svidler, Peter 2754
Morozevich, Alexander 2750
Radjabov, Teimour 2748
