It's a busy summer for kids to engage in sports so it was a virtual 'lagare' day. After attending most of the BEST basketball clinic's graduation activities on a Saturday morning where my 2 chess-playing kids, we met chess ward Jasper Marce and his Aunt Marciana and started travelling to Metro Manila for the actual registration. We eventually made it to the actual pairings and first round, notably there were now 3 Divisions with the U-8 as added feature to give the smaller kiddies their own circle of competition. I noted there were about 12 entries in the U-8 and 16 players in the U-11 while there were a lot more players in the U-15 category.

The round-by-round arbitership, tallying of results and next round pairings proceeded again efficiently, and the 5 rounds were concluded at a little past 6pm. It was a chance to see again the chess parents and community and hobnob and share chess news and developments.

At the conclusion, Dennis Gutierrez III ruled the U-8 with a perfect 5/5 while Andrew Sopungco got solo 2nd place with 4pts, I'm happy for his ever supportive father who dutifully writes down game moves from afar. Tiny Israelito Rilloraza of Las Pinas emerged champion of the U-11 Division while Sta Rosa's Jasper Marce got 2nd place. It was heartwarming to see these 2 'The Natural' kids rise up with such laurels. We will see more of them. Christian Navarro got 3rd place with 4pts lagging by 1/2 point in the tiebreak, punctuated by a final round win over ertswhile co-leader Dennis Gutierrez Jr. Daniel Navarro also surprised with 3 straight wins in rds 2 to 4 before running into the tournament circuits veteran Rilloraza in the final round.

The U-I5 group which had 28 players was ruled by Jose Carlo Castro of FEU with a perfect 5/5, followed by Justin Pe. NBS scion Lucas Ramos got 3rd place with 4pts while Tanauan's Michael Manansala got 5th place with 3.5 pts.
