As of today (August 24, 2009 Philippine time), 108 of 128 total number of players have already been named as qualifiers for the World Chess Cup 2009 which will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk on November 20 to December 15, 2009.
Of the 108 named qualifiers, two were Filipinos. No.99 qualifier is GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. who won his ticket to WC after landing among the Top 10 finishers in the Asian Continental Championship which took place in Subic last May.
No.108 qualifier is GM Darwin Laylo who earned his slot by convincingly topping the recently concluded Asian Zonal 3.3 in Vietnam.
But aren't there supposed to be three Filipino qualifiers to WC 2009?
How about GM Wesley So? As of today, GM So's name is not yet included in the list of qualifiers.
Pleas look at the FIDE list HERE.
Only four slots remain up for grabs for Asian qualifiers through Zonal and Continental championships.
I don't know why GM So's name is not yet inlcluded in the list while GM Laylo's is already in. GMs So and Laylo finished 1-2 in Zonal 3.3.
Can somebody in the know please shed light on this?
