LAST year’s runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos split the point with defending champion Colegio San Juan de Letran, 2-2, to remain on top after the sixth round in the Junior division 85th season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Chess Team Championships at the ground floor Cyberzone area in SM City, Manila, on Sunday.

San Sebastian College-Recoletos handled by coach NM Homer Cunanan raised their total 20 points while Colegio San Juan de Letran under the guidance of NM Roland Joseph Perez notch 16.0 points.

The Mendiola squad powered by Aldous Roy Coronel upset WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda in Board 1 while Kristian Paulo Cristobal subdued Mikee Charlene Suede in Board 3. The Intramuros woodpushers meanwhile led by WNM Cherry Ann Mejia who dealt Arvie Jongko in Board 2 as well Christian Dave Cabida prevailed over John Mark Dimaliwat in Board 4 for a 2-2 stand off.

“Target namin na makapasok sa top 2 matapos ang 1st round para makuha namin ang twice to beat advantage para sa cross-over semis,” said SSC-R head coach NM Homer Cunanan, who honed the skill of World Chess Cup bound GM Darwin Laylo and 2003 Asian Zonal champion IM Ronald Dableo.

According to International Arbiter-NM Elias Lao, who tasked to supervised the country’s oldest collegiate league, the top two teams after the first round robin format are automatically advance in the cross-over semi-final round with a twice to beat advantage. If one team topped both the first and second round, they will declare champion.

In other results, CSB-De La Salle Greenhills of coach NM Erwin Carag nipped University of Perpetual Help Dalta System of coach Ferdie Reyes, 3.5-0.5, while San Beda College of handled by legendary coach Harold “Henrysky” Mariano outplayed Mapua Institute of Technology of FM Roderick Nava, 3-1, and Emilio Aguinaldo College of coach Elvis Calvelo halved the point with Jose Rizal University, 2-2. Arellano University is bye.

In the senior division, last year’s title holder De La Salle-College of St. Benilde of coach FM Fernie Donguines blanked University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 4-0, to snatch the solo leadership board with 15.5 points, half point ahead with Colegio San Juan de Letran (15.0 points) who lost to solo third place San Sebastian College-Recoletos (14.0 points), 1.5-2.5.
