NCAA 2009 Round 5

LAST year’s runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos blanked Mapua Institute of Technology, 4-0, to grab the solo leadership board after the fifth round in the Junior division 85th season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Chess Team Championships at the ground floor Cyberzone area in SM City, Manila, on Saturday.

With the win, the Mendiola based squad under the watchful eye of coach NM Homer Cunana raised their total 18.0 points and is scheduled to meet last year’s title-holder Colegio San Juan de Letran of coach NM Roland Joseph Perez who took a bye in the fourth round with 14.0 points.

San Beda College handled by coach Harold “Henrysky” Mariano, on the other hand, suffered a 4-0 loss to CSB-De La Salle Greenhills of coach NM Erwin Carag.

San Beda was stuck at 12.0 points for fourth place while De La Salle improved their record 10.0 points for fifth place.

In other results, University of Perpetual Help Dalta System of coach Ferdie Reyes defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College of coach Elvis Calvelo, 3-1, to notch 12.5 points for solo third place while Arellano University nipped Jose Rizal University, 3-1, to score 3.0 points.

In the seniors division, defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde of coach FM Fernie Donguines crushed San Beda College, 3.5-0.5, to tie with San Beda for 3rd to 4th placers tallying identical 11.5 points apiece.

San Sebastian College-Recoletos on the other hand bowed to Mapua Institute of Technology, 1.5-2.5, to notch 12.5 points and share the lead with Colegio San Juan de Letran who took a bye in the fifth round.

In other matches saw, Emilio Aguinaldo College edged University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 2.5-1.5, while Jose Rizal University blasted Arellano University, 4-0.

Chief arbiter is International Arbiter-NM Elias Lao. This year’s theme is ““Winning drive @85”.
