The eight-year-old Gonzales finished the seven-round Swiss system tournament unbeaten to rule the grade school division of the chessfest held in honor of the memory of Ateneo alumnus Dr. Jose P. Leviste Sr. (HS ’33, AA ’35).
A grade 3 student from Parang Elementary School, Gonzales beat Mark Marcellana in the final round using the disadvantageous black pieces and went home with the P4,000 purse and the champion’s trophy.
At close second place was Haince De Leon of Marist School-Marikina who finished with six wins and a draw. He received P 2,000 and the second place trophy.
A three-way tie occurred for 3rd place as Brent Alanan of Binangonan Catholic College, Anatoly Pascua of Obrero Elementary School, and Danrev Garcia of San Beda College each finished with 6.0 points. While the three shared the cash prizes which amounted to P1,500, Alanan and Pascua took home the 3rd and 4th place trophies respectively.
