The two Filipinos representing the Philippine flag in the Individual Rapid Chess (Men) tournament of the 2010 Asian Games had contrasting fate in Round 1.
GM Wesley So (2669), the country's No.1 hopeful of landing a medal in the sports of chess, suffered a bitter defeat in the hands of unknown FM Mohammad Samir (2361) of Syria.
Among the Top 11 seeds who are all rated over 2600, only GM Wesley So was not able to extract a full point from their respective much lower-rated opponents.
Notably, this Round 1 of the tournament could the be the most decisive round of all rounds of chess played in the Asian Games - all games ended decisively, yes, no draws from Board 1 to the lowest board!
The good news is, GM Rogelio Antonio (2573), the country's No.2 strongest player, beat untitled Alshoha Basel of Jordan.
A total of 46 players from 23 countries are entered in this event, two players from each country.
Let's hope and pray that our two top bets bring home the coveted medals in the end.
GO Philippines!

Di ka na ulit kakain? Magwawala ka na? Ayaw mo na magtrabaho? Kasi talo ang diyos mo na si Wesly? Marami players ang Pilipinas hindi lang si Weesly.
