The chance of the Philippines to bag its first medal in chess in Asian Games got slimmer after the brightest hopefuls GM Wesley So and GM Rogelio Antonio didn't shine enough to land in Top 3 of the 2010 Asian Games Individual Rapid Chess (Men).
Antonio and So finished the event with 5.5 and 5.0 points, respectively, good enough for 13th and 14th place out of 46 players from 23 countries.
The performance of individual players from our ASEAN neighbors seemed to be reminding us of where they are and where we are now. In the final rankings, the silver medalist was from Vietnam while the Top 7 finisher was from Indonesia.
We have to wait for another four long years for us to have a chance again at winning a medal in chess in the Asian Games in the individual rapid event.
Now, the Philippine Chess Team's chance of winning a medal in the 2010 Asian Games is left in the Team Event.
But with China and India in the field, our team needs to use all its power and might - with lots of prayer, and even luck, to land in the medal column.
Let's all pray for our team. GO PHILIPPINES!
