The saying "Kapag nasusugatan, lalong tumatapang" aptly described GM Wesley So's string of three consecutive wins after a setback in the initial outburst of the ongoing Individual Rapid Chess (Men) of the 2010 Asian Games in China.
No, no . . . Wesley's showing is definitely unlike the stance exhibited by Antonio Margarito against the Filipino boxing hero Congressman Manny Pacquiao. The big difference is that Margarito, after being bloodied, never made it to get back. There was not a chance at all. Only if Margarito plays chess, perhaps he could have used a Queen's Gambit strategy to trap Manny Pacquiao, if you know what I mean, haha.
After a loss to unknown FM Mohammad Samir of Syria, Wesley exhibited a never-say-die warrior stance to devour his next three opponents without mercy to catch up with the early readers with 3.0 points after four rounds.
On the other hand, GM Rogelio Antonio (2573) took a swerve after a good start. After posting a win over untitled Alshoha Basel (2106), Antonio bowed to Viet's power in the hands of top-seed GM Le Quang Liem (2689), perhaps reminding him of the present force of Viet's chess.
After Round 4, Antonio is now ranked No.17 with 2.5 points, after halving the point with IM Hassan Abdullah (2398) of UAE in Round 3, and earning a full point from a forfeiture victory against IM Kakageldyev Amanmurad (2400) of Turkmenistan).
GM Wesley So's latest victim is GM Susanto Megaranto (2528) of Indonesia, who has seemed to be his "suki" these days.
Here is the game of GM Wesley So vs GM Susanto Megaranto in Round 4:
