Vietnam leads 11th ASEAN Age-Group

Halfway through the tournament (standard chess), the Viets are well on their way to bagging the biggest chunk of gold medal haul in the ongoing 11th ASEAN Age-Group Championships in Subic.

After five rounds, seven Vietnamese players are occupying top spots of the tournament's 13 individual age-categories. The Philippine contingent, on the other hand, has four players at the top.

As of this writing, it's 7:4, in favor of Vietnam, right in our own territory. Although it's too early to tell, the number seems to be in favor of the visitors.

In last year's edition of the ASEAN Age Group Championships, Vietnam (the host) dominated the overall medal tally with 31 (gold), 29 (silver), and 26 (bronze). The Philippines came in second with 2 (gold), 5 (silver) and 7 (bronze).

Last year, Vietnam fielded 526 players as host. This year, the Philippines - known for its unique hospitality - fielded 128 players.

The numbers are revealing enough. If the Philippines doesn't respond to the challenges, the country might lose the honor of being the No.1 chess powerhouse in Southeast Asia, a national pride it has treasured for decades.

Don't tell me that it's about quality, not quantity. What I am arriving at is that Vietnam might be doing something right for its remarkable chess boom lately.

Let's say the Philippines is also doing its best. Yeah, we might be doing our best. But our neighbors now seem to be knocking to beating our best.

Let's all pray for the campaign of our young heroes!! Go go go!!!

I hope na makikita ng mga chess leaders kung saan tayo pupulutin after this ASEAN Championships. The same way on what happend 5 years ago sa SEA Games na 8-0, ang score sa gold medals for both men's and women's chess...
Very clear ang development ng Vietnam and they prioritize, support and TRAIN their players.
They also make proper evaluations, eliminations on who is going to events to save on resources. bakit sila magpapadala ng players na hindi qualified at hindi seryoso...sayang ang funding...DI KAGAYA NATIN MOST OF OUR PLAYERS ARE NOT SERIOUS IN THEIR GAMES...AND HAVE NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER...MERON NGA ISANG PLAYER NA GIRLS (DATING OLYMPIAN) NATALO IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME...ANO NAMANG DISCIPLINE ITO...FOR SURE WALANG EVALUATION OR REPORT ANG COACH KUNG ANO TALAGA ANG NANGYARI DITO...YUNG IBANG PLAYERS, LALO NA BOYS U-16, U-20 PALAGING NAGPUPUYAT, NAG BLIBLITZ AT KUNG SAAN SAAN NAG PAPASYAL. ANO BANG SISTEMA YAN?? DAPAT MAY EVALUATING COMMITTEE TAYO AT COACHING REPORT PARA MAGING MATINO ANG MGA PLAYERS NATIN...PARA BANG BIRUAN ANG EVENT NA ITO...

TSK TSK TSK, Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country!!!

Yung disiplina di naman sole responsibility ng coaches/trainers or ng NCFP, mas malaking bahagi ng resposibilidad ay nasa magulang at players na rin mismo. Losing the game/finishing the tourney out of the medal group i think would be enough penalty. (the reg.fee + expenses could amount to 400$, and getting nothing out of it?).Sino ba ang mawawalan ng pera, panahon at chess career? Ang NCFP pwede tumulong, pero hindi "lahat" dapat ipasa natin sa kanila. (parang "katulong" sa bahay, katulong pero lahat siya na ang gumagawa). The results is enough for the evaluation, di na kailangan ng commitee dyan, coaching report? puyatan? blitz? pasyalan? tell em to Tal, Fischer and Tkhaiev! The problem is.... when you get the Gold, its not the problem (blitz, puyatan, pasyalan, buti nga ala pang inuman), and youre a genius, pero pag average lang performance, yun ang binabalingan. Hey im not telling na ok yung ganun, pero wag naman natin ibagsak ang sisi sa iba.... tignan nyu muna mga sarili nyu at players u! Disiplinahin nyu muna sarili nyu bagu nyu disiplinahin ang iba!!!

I think ok naman ang showing natin so far, as our kids would be playing in 4 (-20,-16,-14,-12)of the top board in Open section and one in girls (-12), so, ang problem talaga ay yung sa distaff side.
