Allan Cantonjos (in photo), the pride of Philippine Air Force strikes back again by winning the title of the just concluded 3rd Leg PACE Active Open Chess Championship (2100 Below Rapid Rating) last June 6, 2010 at PACE HQ 2nd Floor 56 Mindanao Avenue, Project 6, Quezon City.
Cantonjos made it to earned 6 points out 7 rounds swiss system when he hard fought by downing Jonathan Bayron of La Union, NM Julius Sinangote and Lennon hart Salgados of FEU in the 5th, 6th and 7th round respectively. He took the champion prize P 4,000 plus the elegant trophy. A three way tie went to 2nd place James Bulicatin of FEU, 3rd Marlon Ricafort of Philippine Army, and 4th NM Efren Bagamasbad. They shared equally there total cash prize of P 3,800. The other qualifiers are 5th Joel Cocjin, the winner also of the Top 1900 below category, 6th NM Julius Sinangote, 7th Lennon Hart Salgados (winner also of the Top 2000 Below category), 8th FM Adrian Ros Pacis, 9th Luffe Magdalaga and 10th Ferdinand Palermo. However, included in the list of qualifiers of 3rd leg are Jerome Villanueva(Top Unrated), Lyndon Sombilon, Jonathan Bayron and Abraham Bayron.
In the other top category, Lawyer Raul Carino took home P 500 plus a PACE medal in the top 1800 below rating. While in the Women’s Category, WNM Sherily Cua, Champion P 1,500, 2nd Angelina Mortos and Teresa Marie Galang. Champion Cantonjos is qualified already for the quarterfinal but will no longer allowed to play for the succeeding legs. The other two legs champion are NM Alex Milagrosa and Jerry Areque.
The event is organized by the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) and supervised by the National Association of Philippine Chess Arbiters (NAPCA). The 4th Leg will be held on June 20, 2010.
