To win a chess tournament is something, but to finish the tournament with a perfect score – that is, all wins, no draw, no loss – is something else.
That’s what the six-year old Stephen Pangilinan did in the recently concluded 2nd National Age Group Championship 2009. He beat all his opponents one after another in the Boys U8 category, scoring 7.0 points in seven rounds.
Notably, he was one of the two perfect scorers among all the eventual champions per age category. The other is Jan Emmanuel Garcia who topped the Boys U16.
In this photo, Pangilinan (right, without hood) was playing against equally talented 10th ASEAN Age Group representative Julius Gonzales.
Let me post their Round 5 encounter again, but this time with a game replayer. Let’s see for ourselves the kind of chess talents these young kids possess. Watch and be amazed!
