Penang moments

And yet another overdue post. These photos were sent to me by my friend FIDE Instructor Norlito Bersamina, the father of NM Paulo Bersamina, who was in Malaysia last December during the course of the 2010 Penang Open.

Just a bit of rewind, the two great Olivers of Philippine Chess (IM Oliver Dimakiling and IM Oliver Barbosa) topped this event, with the former getting the higher tiebreak and therefore the title. Just in case you want to view again the respective favorite games of these two Olivers in that tournament, you can watch the games HERE and HERE.

Pinoy power in Malaysia: Gilbert Pascua, FM Castellano, NM Paulo Bersamina, IM Yves Ranola, FM Haridas Pascua, NM Reggie Olay, FM JJ de Ramos and IM Oliver Dimakiling. Dimakiling won in this crucial Round 8 encounter.

NM Paulo Bersamina crushed Limono Handjojo of Indonesia in this clash of youth and experience

Pinoy vs Pinoy, but bloody war still exploded. NM Edgar Reggie Olay (in green) got the better of this battle.

Interesting on the last photo, have learned via FB that Elo Mariano in turn pulled the rug from under FM Olay in the final round in the Asean Open in Spore in last week of Dec.

Had Olay won, I think he would get his last IM norm to get the targetted IM title, he reportedly went a piece up, but somehow the advantage dissipated and Elo won. So in turn, Elo earned I think his first IM norm. In turn Olay felt it and decided to rest and go back to Phils, and didn't proceed to Vietnam. FM Castellano accompanied him home.
