WFM Catherine Pereña
Pinay campaigner WFM Catherine Pereña (in photo) drew with ersthwhile leader WIM Hoang Thi Nhu Y of Vietnam to lead the Philippine women contingent's campaign in the 1st Campomanes Memorial Cup (Women).
Pereña has piled up 3.5 points with the draw with Hoang (4.5 points) who slid to No.2 spot and surrendered the lead to WGM Shen Yang (5.0 points) of China.
Pereña is now in 8th spot, followed by another Pinay campaigner WIM Cristine Rose Mariano who also has 3.5 points.
After six rounds of battle, the Pinay campaigners have yet to squeeze out a win against their foreign counterparts.
Belated happy birthday to Catherine by the way. She reached the draw with the ersthwhile leader of the tournament on her birthday. What's the feeling of playing in a tournament during your birthday?

1st Florencio Campomanes Cup Memorial Tournament (Challenger) Round 6
Fourteen-year old Angelo Vince Medina posted his fifth win to lead the 1st Florencio Campomanes Cup Memorial Tournament (Challenger) after six rounds with 5.5 points.
Just in case you overlooked his age, he's just 14. Impressively enough he defeated more senior players like Allan Sasot, Sherwin Tiu, and Gary Legaspi to jostle his way to the top of the ladderboard.
The Challengers section (based on my observation during the staging of the previous PGMA and Pichay Cups) used to be a homogenous field of Filipino players cutting each other's throats. It's now good to see that in this tournament, we see players from China, India, Russia, and USA.
Let's hope that more foreign players join the Challengers section in the future.
