Congratulations to IM Oliver Dimakiling (in photo) for topping the 2010 Penang Heritage City International Open Chess Tournament which took place in Dewan Sri Pinang, Penang, Malaysia from December 8 to 12.
Dimakiling finished the event with 7.5 points - the same output shared by compatriot IM Oliver Barbosa - but emerged the overall winner with higher tie-break points.
The 1-2 punch finish by Dimakiling and Barbosa showed the dominance of Filipinos in this event.
Notably, of the 11 Pinoy participants, seven landed in the Top 10 in the final rankings.
My young friend 12-year old NM Paulo Bersamina scored 4.5 points after halving the point with 10th placer fellow Pinoy FM Julius de Ramos and beating two Malaysians, a Singaporean, and an Indonesian.
This international event was a 71-player field, with only 11 titled players (1 GM, 5 IMs, 3 FMs, 1 WFM, and 1 WCM) from nine countries.
